Big movies coming to the small screen

By Marni Weisz

August 4

THE SOLOIST (pictured above)

Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Jamie Foxx

Director: Joe Wright (Atonement)

Story: If you think a movie about a schizophrenic, homeless musical prodigy (Foxx) and the Los Angeles Times columnist (Downey Jr.) who befriends — and writes about — him sounds uplifting, think again. The Soloist is based on a real story, and that real story was complicated and, at times, disheartening...and so is the movie.

RACE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN

Stars: Dwayne Johnson, AnnaSophia Robb

Director: Andy Fickman (The Game Plan)

Story: A cabbie (Johnson) has to get two extraterrestrials — who happen to be disguised as children (Robb, Alexander Ludwig) — to the Nevada mountain that’s hiding their spaceship before an evil organization can stop them.

DVD Extras: two-disc set features bloopers, deleted scenes

I LOVE YOU, MAN

Stars: Paul Rudd, Jason Segel

Director: John Hamburg (Along Came Polly)

Story: A bromance blooms when uptight real estate agent Peter Klaven (Rudd) meets laidback investor Sydney Fife (Segel) at an open house. Which is perfect, since Peter really needs to bond with a man fast — all of his friends are women, and he has no one to be best man at his rapidly approaching wedding.

17 AGAIN

Stars: Zac Efron, Matthew Perry

Director: Burr Steers (Igby Goes Down)

Story: A little bit of Big. A little bit of It’s a Wonderful Life. A lot of Zac Efron. Thirtysomething Mike (Perry) despairs after his marriage fails and his kids want nothing to do with him. He returns to his high school for some old-fashioned wallowing and tells the janitor how much better his life could have been. On his way home, there’s that mysterious janitor about to jump from a bridge. Mike goes after him and plunges into the water below only to emerge as his 17-year-old self (Efron).

August 18

TYSON

Stars: Mike Tyson, Don King

Director: James Toback (Black and White)

Story: Toback’s documentary about heavyweight champ Mike Tyson makes no attempt to be objective, instead giving the embattled fighter a chance to tell his side of numerous stories, from his marriage to Robin Givens to his feelings about Desiree Washington, the woman who put him behind bars for sexual assault.

August 25

POLYTECHNIQUE

Stars: Karine Vanasse, Maxim Gaudette

Director: Denis Villeneuve (Maelström)

Story: The true story of December 6th, 1989, when Marc Lepine (Gaudette) entered Montreal’s École Polytechnique, divided the men from the women, and opened fire on the latter.

ADVENTURELAND

Stars: Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart

Director: Greg Mottola (Superbad)

Story: Strapped for cash, a recent college grad (Eisenberg) takes a job at a rundown amusement park where he crushes on his co-worker (Stewart), smokes a lot of weed and learns to lighten up.

DVD Extras: two disc set features deleted scenes, commentary
